What is cupping?![]() Cupping involves the application of suction to the treatment area through the use of glass, plastic or bamboo cups. It is used alone or as an adjunct to acupuncture. Cups may be left in place for a short time or moved along a muscle group. Moving cupping is often applied to the back to encourage circulation and relief muscle tension and pain. Stagnant blood, waste material and toxins created from injury are drawn to the skin surface which allows new blood and nutrients to enter the area and promote healing. Cupping may be used for back pain, sprains, soft tissue injuries and pain associated with menstruation. It is painless and feels similar to a medium-light or deep massage depending on the amount of suction applied by the acupuncturist. Cups are applied to areas that are generally covered by clothing. Red or purple coloration indicate that the internal stagnation has been effectively drawn to the surface. This therapeutic side-effect will resolve in a few days. ![]() |
